A fatty liver diagnosis is often found on routine labs or imaging, sometimes after years of feeling tired, struggling with weight, or being told that blood sugar and triglycerides are creeping up. The best habits for fatty liver are not a harsh cleanse or a short-term diet. They address the metabolic drivers behind liver fat – especially insulin resistance, excess visceral fat, low activity, alcohol exposure, and disrupted sleep.
For many adults, fatty liver is now called metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, or MASLD. It can exist without symptoms, which makes objective monitoring especially valuable. The good news is that the liver can respond meaningfully to sustained changes in weight, nutrition, movement, and metabolic control. The goal is not perfection. It is a plan you can repeat long enough for your lab values, body composition, and liver health to change.
1. Treat insulin resistance as the central issue
Fatty liver is commonly a metabolic problem, not simply a dietary fat problem. When the body becomes less responsive to insulin, the liver is more likely to convert and store excess energy as fat. Elevated fasting glucose, A1C, triglycerides, waist circumference, and blood pressure can all point toward the same larger pattern.
Start by building meals around protein, fiber-rich plants, and minimally processed carbohydrates. This does not require eliminating every carbohydrate. It means being more selective about the forms and portions that work for your metabolism. Start at your current level and build toward regular weekly activity rather than trying to make up for a sedentary week with one punishing workout.
Strength training deserves equal attention. Muscle is metabolically active tissue that helps the body handle glucose more effectively. Two or more resistance sessions per week can be enough to create momentum when paired with daily movement. If you have joint pain, a history of injury, severe fatigue, or significant deconditioning, a lower-impact plan may be the smarter place to begin.
A practical strategy is to walk for 10 to 15 minutes after meals. It is simple, repeatable, and can help reduce post-meal glucose exposure without requiring a gym membership.
6. Prioritize sleep and screen for sleep apnea
Short, fragmented sleep can worsen appetite regulation, blood sugar control, blood pressure, and weight management. Obstructive sleep apnea is also common in people with obesity and metabolic dysfunction, and untreated apnea may contribute to fatigue and metabolic strain.

8. Monitor the liver with real medical follow-up
Normal or mildly elevated liver enzymes do not always tell the whole story. Some people with significant liver fat or fibrosis have enzymes in the reference range, while others have abnormal tests for reasons unrelated to fatty liver. A proper evaluation may include liver enzymes, A1C, fasting glucose or insulin markers, lipid testing, kidney function, blood count, thyroid testing when indicated, medication review, and imaging or fibrosis risk assessment.
